I owned a golf course for eleven years and have worked part time for the Kalamazoo Municipal Golf Association for the last twelve years so I have a reasonable understanding of golf course operations. The KMGA has a classic 18, a 27 hole course on the east side and a executive 9 located right down town. As with all these days, trimming of the budget has become a paramount. Just throwing out some idea's that we used on the classic 18 with the knowledge that different grass and different growing conditions prevail. Mowed the fairways three times a week. * Raked the secondary traps every two or three days.* Removed seed from the tee repair box.* Had the supt. re-evaluate chemicals with the hope of reducing 20%.* On league days, eliminated rangers during league play and this has really worked out well as leagues seem to patrol themselves. * Reduced pro shop work hours from 300 man hours to 250.*Reduced merchandise price in pro shop to increase sales and make it member friendly. *Reduced price of food cart, including beer to make it more appealing.*Assistant pro's spent more time with starter helping them aid golfers.*Kept the roughs a little shorter to speed up play and aid in finding balls.*Kept the main practice green next to club house cut daily but the six other practice greens located around the course were cut every other day. I do not know if any of this could be Incorporated at Countryside but it does show that reduction costs work and I do not think that these cuts have hurt the golf course any. The course averages between 60 and 70 thousand rounds per year. Thank you for your consideration, Larry G Hulce
