The tax money flows

Re: John Froloff’s Letter of the Day headlined, “On the road again (and again ...).’’
John’s letter credited the Collier County government with helping our economy!
He cited the ongoing numerous Radio Road projects as an example.
Yes, Radio Road has undergone numerous beautification projects, but the cost of these projects has been borne by a few communities that abut Radio Road (Berkshire Lakes, Countryside, Glen Eagle, Foxfire and several smaller communities). These communities agreed some eight years ago to be put under a municipal service taxing unit (MSTU). Unfortunately, these few communities were never told there would be no sunset law or lowering of the millage rate when the road beautification was complete.
I am aware that in order to have this beautification maintained, you need mowing, fertilization and watering.
However, I do not believe the millage rate has been lowered from the original rate set for the Radio Road improvement plan. I guess that is why the county, not wanting to feel guilty about taking extra tax money from these few communities abutting Radio Road, decides to plant a few more bushes or redo the curbing on Radio Road each year.
The MSTU is a “cash cow” for the county, and the state of Florida has since sought to ban this practice within the state.
