Someone recently reminded us of Ken Phillips' suggestion that we might consider reversing the sequence for opening the swing gates and the lift bars so that the swing gate go fully open before the bar lifts. This was considered by the new ad-hoc gate committee, and the club was asked to give it a trial. However, we were concerned that the members would need to be notified so the trial was delayed. There was another concern. The type of swing gate actuators we now use is quite slow. If we reverse the sequence, it might make people impatient waiting for the bar to go up. So we have not pressed the issue. Also, subsequently club installed the new metal lift arms. It turns out that since they are a different brand than the old systems, they don't have the feature that would allow reversing the sequence. I guess the idea is dead for now. Sorry.
