For those who would advocate an increase in our Countryside speed limit and suggest that, because we have not yet had a serious accident , I would like to bring the following to your attention: Six of our similar neighboring golfing communities have speed limits of 15, 20 and 25mph, and in addition, some have speed bumps. 37mph in a 25mph zone is 50% above the posted limit. That equates to doing 105mph on I-75! And do you want to wait until that major accident happens to do something about it? 500 vehicles/day pass between St Ives and St James, 90% of them are exceeding the posted limit! Consider this - if forensic evidence can show that the driver involved in an accident resulting in death was travelling at an imprudent speed (i.e. 50% over the posted limit) he/she can be cited for vehicular manslaughter which can carry a sentence of 3 - 5 years in prison. The real worry however, is when the greedy negligence lawyers go to work on the "wrongful death" suit and start looking for deep pockets from which to extract big bucks for their clients (and themselves) never mind the driver involved - "Let's see, what did Countryside do to help keep speeds down in the community? What did the Security and Safety Committee do to help prevent this accident.?" Now you are starting to look at some very expensive scenarios. Increasing the speed limits on our roadways is probably not the way to go!
