I was amazed at the meeting when a board member answered the question about damage done to turf by pull carts. A normal size person pulling a 5 pound cart with a bag would do more damage then two adults with bags and a 500 pound cart. I did not know the answer but it did not seem to me that there were facts to substantiate this theory. Going on line I found a book called Practical Golf Course Maintenance and on page 151 they talked about carts. The basic of the the information is:
Most of the damage done to golf turf is done by power carts. Golf as we know it today must have power carts for economic reasons and we have to learn to live with them. We have to learn to control the use of power carts and to repair the damage that they inevitably cause the turf. As soon as more then ten carts are used on a course wear will start to appear. If you do not have cart path the best west way to help is to have the 90 degree rule and have it followed. Turf is hurt when a cart goes to one ball and then cuts across to another and soon the 90 degree rule has no meaning.
It was interesting that a friend of mine, a non Countryside person, said how ironic it is that your club spends thousands of dollars on a work out room for fitness yet they charge you to walk the course which is a great arobic workout.
Please think again about the walking fee. You could have increased the fee of the walking pass and I would not have objected as I do to the fee
